The epic tale of the noble Malbec grape is like no other, and the Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino label pays homage to the history of this variety from its native France to its rise in Argentina. The four female figures on its label represent its various milestones. The first woman, symbolizing the birth of Malbec, is Eleanor of Aquitaine, a strong Old World presence, depicted next to the bridge at Cahors, where the varietal originated. The second woman, an immigrant, symbolizes the settlers who emigrated to the New World and the unknown explorers and adventurers who connected Europe with America. Phylloxera represents the death of Malbec in the Old World and its subsequent rebirth in America. Finally, there is Doña Zapata, symbolized by Adrianna Catena, who represents birth, land and motherhood, sharing the riches of the New World. Today, the fourth generation of the Catena family is leading the renaissance of Malbec in the high altitude vineyards of Argentina. This wine, over 100 years old, represents a family’s journey to produce an Argentine Malbec that could compete with the best wines in the world. Vitification: Fermentation in new French oak barrels, 225 to 500 liters; 20% whole cluster fermentation. The whole bunches, manually poured into the barrels, ferment for 30 days, achieving a perfect integration of fruit and oak. Fermentation temperatures are kept low to achieve greater extraction of aromatic components. The pumping-over tasks are also manual, obtaining a soft and gentle extraction of flavors and tannins. The yeasts used are indigenous. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrels favors the precipitation of lees and sediments. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. Origin: Mendoza, Argentina Varieties: Malbec
